R Shell 1.0: A Chair Design that Strikes the Perfect Balance

Mixing Natural Elements with Construction Engineering

For applications like the ingenious mechanics engineering and techniques in building (St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo), the outer lines are neat, and the light and shadow are just perfect and fascinating. I think to myself: is there an opportunity that this method can be used on to product design? Focusing on the advantage of the mechanics and techniques of Hyperbolic Paraboloid shell, I used it on chair design in which ergonomic is necessary and also demonstrate the beauty of the structure.

R Shell is a conceptual designed chair realized in steel and FRP. Its design magnificently mixes natural elements with construction engineering. R Shell is formed by two curve surfaces leaning one against the other; these surfaces support each other and strike the balance between the point, the line, the virtual and the entity surface. One of the two surfaces is constructed with multiple lines. These sinuous lines enchant the eye forming a virtual space that takes visual to another level.

The R Shell chair showcases the beauty and strength of the Hyperbolic Paraboloid shell construction method. This innovative design approach allows for the creation of a thin shell that provides strong support and protection. Even with a thickness of only 4 to 10 cm, the R Shell chair is able to provide a comfortable and stable seating experience.

The chair's dimensions are w690 x d750 x h850 mm, making it suitable for various spaces and environments. The use of steel and FRP materials ensures durability and longevity.

The R Shell chair was first exhibited in May 2014 at Yodex, the largest student-oriented design exhibition held in Taiwan. Since then, it has garnered attention and recognition for its unique design and innovative use of materials.

The inspiration for the R Shell chair came from the designer's fascination with architectural engineering, particularly the construction method of Hyperbolic Paraboloid shell. By analyzing the forces on the two curved shell surfaces and deconstructing the relationship between the surface and the line, the designer was able to create a chair that showcases the balance between form and function.

The R Shell chair has received numerous accolades, including the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its unique design and innovative construction, the R Shell chair stands as a testament to the power of combining art, science, design, and technology. It not only provides a comfortable seating experience but also adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
